How has the University helped me so far?

My life as a student of Qatar University

being a student in Qatar University has offered me great opportunities that I may not have found in other universities, the department always encourages and help us do volunteering and internships that will give us more experience and help in building our resume's. Also, the faculty is nice to the students and supportive, not to mention the abundant student services from activities to transportation inside the campus.

The department sends us emails with links to volunteer in different events, I have done some volunteering work in Ajyal Film Festival and in a kids library. In addition, to applying for an internship in translation for the coming spring semester which is exactly what i'm looking for. I'm currently working with one of my great professors on a grant research on linguistics that we look forward to publishing it and present it in a conference in Toronto. This is teaching me how to make a proper research and giving me experience for my future career. Thus, I'm working hard on both translation and linguistics.

Challenges and obstacles

The main challenge lies in managing time and balancing between work and studying, since i'm a part time employee and a full time student. Regardless of the challenges I'm happy of what I'm doing and glad of what the University is offering to us. However, there is a major thing that needs improvement which is the social life here in campus. I'm a very social person and I like seeing people getting together and enjoying themselves, because it gives me positivity and good vibes. Unfortunately, QU students don't get to enjoy their social life as other student in other universities. I have been to few universities here in Doha and in Jordan and the atmosphere in there is pretty different and more lively. I also believe that, the curriculum needs to be improved ,a lot, of both linguistics and translation, we need to be more entrenched and trained in the field in order to be fully prepared for such jobs. These are the main things I would like to improve in the university, and other than that I believe that with hard work we can reach what we wish for.

  1. Hi Shahed,

Great post! I enjoyed reading it.

I had assumed that translation students do get a chance to apply what they learn in the field - it seems that I was mistaken. It is quite unfortunate, because I believe that translation skills are best practised, rather than simply learnt theoretically. Perhaps applied training is not so frequently offered because translation is not major program?

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us, Shahed!

  2. Hello Shahed,

It is impressing how you can manage your time between studying and working! that is really challenging. I believe that the atmosphere in Qatar University is really enjoyable if the student wanted to enjoy it. What kind of atmosphere did you find in Jordan and other universities in Qatar?

  3. hello shahed,

I really liked how you utilized your university life in volunteering and joining internship. Nowadays volunteering became a wide way to get experience, know others and help people and I believe that you did a great job doing it especially in Ajyal where all nationalities get to meet each others and share knowledge and experience . I enjoyed your blog ,keep going.
