A peek into a linguist life in Doha

In this blog I will be talking about myself, my career and my goals in the future..

My name is Shahed and I am a Jordanian student majoring in English linguistics and minoring in translation at Qatar University. I come from a culture that has a huge part in shaping who I am and how I think, my passion for learning and know knew languages was with me since I was 15 years old and that's when I had a friend who taught herself a new language and became fluent in it which made me even more eager to do something and to take a step forward into what I love. She inspired me that anyone can do anything, so I started learning Spanish and watching and reading more in Spanish, I wouldn't say that I'm even good at it yet, but I always try to find the time to learn more and more. This takes us to why I chose to be a linguist, because I find it enjoyable and a great major that improves me as a person, because it introduces other languages and cultures to me and that helps me become a better communicator. Linguists teaches you fanscinating things about other languages and how they work and meanings which makes you think of how much words can be effective and powerful.


 I have always dreamt of a career that I’m going to be passionate about and that will allow me to do the things that I love. Therefore, my two favorite things that I would love to work as is a linguist or a translator, and I believe that the two of them together help me presume my dream since they complement each other. My plans for when I graduate is to get my master degree in translation in one of the great Universities here in Doha and to focus more on being a translator. However, there are many challenges that a linguist or a translator might encounter here in Doha, unfortunately, my field of study has a weak future here since linguistics is not a very well known field and the only place I know that I can work as a linguist in is Qatar University as a professor or a researcher. Furthermore, for a translator it is not as hard to find a job but it just needs you to be very well experienced to be able to work in places like Aljazeera Channel. Still there are a wider opportunities for a translator, for instance, to be a medical interpreter or a law translator or even work in the media field.

After the World Cup and until 2030 Qatar for will witness a flourishment in all fields, more job opportunities will be available for people with a better life. What I’m looking forward to do is be a interpretor in the World Cup, which is such an exciting thing to do and to be involved in the media field more. I’m working on improving my soft skills and communicating skills, as well as learning a new language  and being fluent in it since languages other than English and Arabic will be needed such as French and Spanish. I believe In 2030 more opportunities will be available for both translators and linguists.

Qatar Economic Development  For the past couples of weeks, my group and I have been working on a report about Qatar economic development. In the report we talked about Qatar vision 2030, Qatar after the blockade, and two important projects that helped in the growth of the economy; and they are Baladna and Lusail City. The blockade was meant to affect Qatar’s economy and making it helpless in front of the siege counties. However, Qatar was able to prove itself and its economic strength in overcoming this crisis by finding new partnerships and working on local projects such as Baladna. Sheikha Almayassa's TED Talk About culture.     Globalizing the local, localizing the global was the title of her talk. Sheikha Al mayassa talked about different aspects of the Qatari culture and touched upon important notions.
